America Walks is a small, but mighty, national 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that supports walkable, accessible, equitable and inclusive communities for all. Position Overview

We are looking for an organized and driven individual to work closely with our executive director and staff to support developing and implementing an effective communications strategy. All staff participate in communications work because it is central to our mission, with the Communications Manager expected to drive outcomes in a collaborative environment.

Key Responsibilities

Communications Strategy

  • Development and implementation of a strategic communications plan to broaden the awareness and impact of America Walks and its work across key audiences, including media, supporters, advocates, volunteers, partners, and other stakeholders.  
  • Manage communications across all channels including website, email, social media, traditional media, mailed pieces, and events.

Systems Management

  • Work with staff, volunteers, allies, and community members to develop compelling multimedia stories, and serve as lead editor for all communications.
  • List management and growth through our CRM
  • Manage and continually improve America Walks’ website, newsletter, and social media. Work with consultants on website upgrades.
  • Create blogs, web content, press releases, newsletters, handouts, and social media graphics
  • Develop, staff and implement our monthly webinar program.
  • Oversee our photo, video and graphics library

Building Our Base Of Supporters 

  • Collaborate with the development manager and executive director to implement communications that bring in new donors and steward existing ones
  • Collaborate with the program staff to implement communications that recruit and develop advocates 
  • Collaborate with other America Walks staff to implement aspects of our adopted Racial Justice Strategic Imperatives

  • We are a small staff, so other activities as needed in support of America Walks mission

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

An ideal candidate would have the following attributes and experience

  • Passionate about building our impact through communications that compel attention, educate the public, inspire people to take action, and build our base of support.
  • Strong program management skills, including the ability to manage multiple tasks, and set and track deadlines.
  • Experience with Mailchimp and Wordpress, dedication to maintaining communications systems to expand our reach
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively drive outcomes in a team environment. Enjoys working in a team environment to develop and experiment with tactics and messages that can help America Walks reach a broader audience.
  • Can write clean copy that demystifies and explains issues, and support it with appropriate photos and graphics.
  • Graphic design skills, and familiarity with graphic design tools.
  • Experience with driving engagement on social media platforms.
