Founded in 1998, Walking Mountains’ mission is “to awaken a sense of wonder and inspire environmental stewardship and sustainability through natural science education.” Walking Mountains (WM) is a community-based nonprofit 501c3 organization in Avon, Colorado. Position Overview:
This key position is a full-time team member who works closely with our Energy team to help achieve the strategic objective of Walking Mountains' Sustainability Programs (SP), which is “to act as an agent of change to achieve local climate action goals and improve the social, economic, and environmental resilience of the Eagle County community.” We strive to be a resource and educational hub that inspires action, from local initiatives to global impact.
This role is essential to the daily operations of two key initiatives: The Energy Smart Colorado (ESC) residential program and Radon Awareness efforts. The person in this role will help drive program implementation, outreach, and education to support households in making informed decisions about energy efficiency and radon safety. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Administrative & Program Coordination Responsibilities (70%)
- Serve as the primary point of contact for participant inquiries via phone and email, delivering exceptional customer service and acting as an energy concierge, directing clients to the appropriate staff and providing energy coaching as needed.
- Manage and update program data and documentation using platforms such as Microsoft Office, Google DRIVE, Salesforce, Formstack, Formyoula, Snugg Pro, and Dropbox, including data entry, reporting, and document updates.
- Schedule and coordinate meetings, training sessions, and program activities using Google Meet, Zoom, and RegFox.
- Maintain contractor communications and update contractor lists regularly.
- Update workflows for the Residential Energy Smart Colorado and Radon Awareness programs as necessary to ensure continued program effectiveness.
- Obtain and maintain relevant certifications, including the Building Science Principles certification within six months of employment; and, with a work commitment, the BPI Building Analyst Certification.
- Serve as the primary contact for contracted energy analysts, coordinating 2–3 annual meetings to review program updates, incentives, and best practices.
- Oversee the home energy assessment process, ensuring seamless workflow coordination, assignment of energy analysts, timely payments, and proper data management.
- Coordinate home energy assessment rebates with utility partners, including Holy Cross Energy (monthly through Energy Smart Colorado partnership) and Xcel Energy (per job), ensuring all paperwork is processed accurately.
- Bill Active Energies Solar for any Solar specific energy assessments, twice per year.
- Manage inventory of quick-fix supplies, and audit equipment.
- Process rebates for Energy Smart Colorado residential and Radon mitigation, including verification, tracking, and mailing of checks, with support from your supervisor.
- Perform energy modeling for improvement projects with guidance and support from the supervisor.
- Participate in bi-weekly check-ins with your supervisor, sharing progress, activities, and results.
Radon Awareness Administration (9%)
- Organize and coordinate Radon Action Month (January) in collaboration with internal and external partners.
- Contribute to the annual grant application process to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE).
- Manage inventory of radon test kits, distribute them as needed, track test results, and provide guidance on radon safety.
- Train partners and WM employees on radon awareness and proper test kit distribution protocols.
- Attend the Annual EPA Radon Conference (optional, based on interest).
- Support for Sustainable Business Staff Transition (8%)
- Manage and provide training on the Lucid Building OS Dashboards, with the aim of phasing them out by the end of 2025, if possible.
- Assist the Sustainable Business Coordinator with account setup for campus buildings on the THG Energy Solutions platform, including benchmarking and developing a public interface (targeted for availability by 2026).
- Provide training to the Sustainable Business Coordinator on the Energy Smart Colorado commercial rebate process and how to offer energy coaching to businesses.
Outreach & Marketing Responsibilities (8%)
- Represent the Energy team at outreach events, including tabling, as needed.
- Present Energy program offerings to internal and external audiences, highlighting program impact and outcomes as appropriate.
- Collaborate with the marketing team to create, maintain, and distribute outreach materials, manage resources in the WM Welcome Center and SP Pod, and support campaigns such as Radon Action Month, while working with internal and external partners.
Organizational Responsibilities (5%)
- Actively participate in Walking Mountains staff meetings, retreats, and organization-wide events.
- Act in compliance with the Walking Mountains Employee Handbook.
- Contribute to WM Quarterly Statistics for the fiscal year; and WM Annual Report at the end of each calendar year.
- Actively participate in 1-2 Walking Mountains staff committees (Green Team, JEDI, IT, Cultural Guiding Committee, Wellness Committee, and more).
- Engage in Sustainability Programs meetings, cross-functional projects, and related events.
- Serve on internal SP committees, such as the Electric Vehicles/Bikes group or EVGBG (Eagle Valley Green Building Group), as desired.
- Contribute to the Buildings sub-group of the Climate Action Collaborative, with optional involvement in the Transportation sub-group; participate in other CAC pilot projects as needed, such as Green Lease.
- Participate in monthly Energy Smart Colorado calls on a rotating basis, providing program updates.

Requirements
Qualifications:
- Associate's degree (AA or AS) or equivalent experience.
- Strong communication skills, fluent in English, with the ability to engage diverse audiences.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
- Proficiency in software such as Adobe Acrobat, MS Office, Salesforce, and Dropbox (or similar).
- Self-motivated, and able to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to local sites, occasionally carrying equipment.
- Demonstrated ability to work with diverse teams and a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Preferred:
- Bachelor’s degree (or working towards) in a related field such as sustainability, environmental science, or building science.
- Strong interest in or knowledge of building science, home energy assessments, and supporting others in navigating best practices for energy upgrades, including available incentives and financing options.
- Experience with customer relationship software (e.g., Salesforce, RegFox).
- Proficiency in Spanish (spoken and written) to communicate with the local Latinx community.
- Critical thinking, problem-solving, decision-making, and customer service skills/experience.
Compensation and Benefits:
Starting salary of $50,000 annual dependent on experience. Pay dates are every other Friday, and there are 26 pay periods in a calendar year.

Work Environment: The position is primarily office-based. Some remote work may be available with a "Flexible Work Arrangement Agreement" after the training period, with a minimum of 3 office days per week.
- Open office setting with occasional local events and meetings.
- Office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., generally with a half an hour unpaid lunch break and the workweek is Monday through Friday.
- Rare out-of-town travel.
