The Opportunity

The National Western Center has an exciting opportunity for an experienced sustainability and safety professional in Denver, Colorado. The Campus Sustainability & Safety Manager will have the leadership responsibility to build, grow and manage the sustainability and safety programs for the Center and across the campus.  Under the supervision of the Chief Operating Officer, this role will provide site sustainability and safety program direction; ensure campus, facility and event compliance with National Western Center standards; create and report on performance metrics; and ensure campus sustainability and safety policies and procedures are aligned with OSHA regulations and City guidelines.

This is a multifaceted job with a broad spectrum of opportunities for professional development. You’ll join a small, nimble, collaborative, creative, and entrepreneurial team as we accelerate growth of a new events hub and innovation campus in Denver, Colorado.

What you will do:

Sustainability Management:

  • Execute and onboard the vision of the sustainability program for the National Western Center
  • Oversee sustainability requirements and objectives setting, including the creation and reporting on KPI’s, initiatives and metrics for the Authority and campus partners
  • Manage relationships with contractors, vendors and partners to communicate campus goals, and raise awareness on sustainability initiatives including training and education
  • Maintain and track all sustainability data and reports using a dashboard platform, and monitor City initiatives to ensure campus compliance
  • Identify ways to minimize waste streams by finding alternate diversion methods
  • Implement and maintain hazardous materials waste removal and reporting

Facilities, Campus and Event Safety:

  • Influence best practices and lead continuous improvement initiatives to reduce work risks and improve safe work practices, integrating these into venue operations
  • Create a campus safety orientation and onboarding program with contractors, partners, staff and vendors; establish a record bank of institutional trainings
  • Maintain knowledge base of safety rules and regulations, including reporting requirements of federal, state and local governments
  • Lead reporting on campus safety, creating a matrix to provide measurable results, investigate incidents and near misses, and report and track to review with senior staff for trends or concerns
  • Maintain and keep current all materials, SDS, work reports, OSHA updates and other information for NWC campus; audit and maintain campus and building emergency response plans and factors that are needed along with commissioning requirements for new facilities

Other Operations Support:

  • Monitor food & beverage concessions to ensure KPI’s and sustainability efforts are achieved
  • Collaborate with Event Managers and coordinate with f&b and janitorial contractors on campus event activities, communicating timely and necessary information
  • Lead reporting, together with janitorial and f&b contractors, on event client feedback while working with them to meet campus sustainability and safety requirements and initiatives
  • Oversight on janitorial and concessions supplies and equipment maintenance program
  • Perform other duties as assigned

What you will bring along:

  • 5+ years of relevant experience in sustainability and safety management, experience with arena, convention, stadium and entertainment venues in a multi-facility campus a plus
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; or proven relevant experience in the field
  • Minimum requirement of OSHA 30 certification, familiarity with ANSI and NFPA standards
  • Has worked with large scale waste diversion facilities and programs
  • Excellent communication, relationship management, and organizational skills; attention to detail and ability to analyze and process improve
  • High EQ and interpersonal skills

Work location and hours: This position can be performed through a mix of on-site and remote work in Denver, Colorado.

Compensation range: The starting salary is $85,000 – $90,000

The brand-new Stockyards Event Center is a multipurpose space with two arenas, ample parking and views of the Rocky Mountains and the Denver skyline. In 2018, the campus partners created the National Western Center Authority, a nonprofit organization responsible for operating, maintaining, programming, and promoting the National Western Center. The Authority is the primary entity responsible for ensuring the National Western Center achieves its mission. It is also responsible for developing a community investment fund benefiting the residents of the Globeville, Elyria and Swansea neighborhoods in which the campus is located. The Authority’s work is well underway in preparation for buildings being completed and the larger campus opening to the public. The Authority is guided by a 13-member board of directors.
