Wildfires have become the number one driver of forest loss globally and emerges as a priority area for global collaboration and innovation.

The World Economic Forum aims to establish a Global Network for Wildfire Leadership, to promote knowledge exchange and bring together public, private and philanthropic thought leadership to improve, integrate and implement solutions to enhance our ability to understand, respond to and harness wildfire.

The network would notably contribute to:

  • Create and design globally influential knowledge products to champion comprehensive resilience approaches to wildfire risk that address root causes and immediate response and have enduring impacts in a coordinated way.
  • Articulate and disseminate the business case for investing in wildfire resilience, in order to mobilise philanthropic and corporate funding for wirldfire prevention and response.
  • Support and accelerate implementation of pilots and promising innovations to test, improve and scale best practices through multistakeholder action, to support national and local actors to adapt and operationalize global best practices in pre-fire management, rapid response, community resilience and post-fire remediation.  

The Centre For Nature and Climate (CNC) of the World Economic Forum is recruiting a Wildfires Community Lead to structure and manage the Global Network for Wildfire Leadership, drive the network agenda and coordinate with related initiatives within the World Economic Forum.

Reporting lines and interaction

This role will report to the Head of the 1 Trillion Tree initiative (1t.org). The post-holder will work closely with the various initiatives of the CNC, particularly 1t.org, building upon and strengthening 1t.org engagement in North America.

Breakdown of main responsibilities

  • Facilitate thought leadership and curate innovation around 4 key thematic areas of intervention:
    • Prevention: Forest management practices ensuring long-term prevention of unwanted fire
    • Early detection: pre-ignition alert systems and early detection
    • Post-ignition solutions to improve response effectiveness  
    • Post-fire restoration: Restoring and reviving degraded forests and biodiversity from fire damage
  • Shape and Manage the Global Network for Wildfire Leadership, in collaboration with CNC leadership team, including:
    • Identification and nomination process for stakeholders to compose the multistakeholder network
    • Managing community meetings, including agenda and workplan
    • providing ongoing guidance on network deliverables
    • Leading on the delivery of a knowledge paper to inform the strategy of the network focusing on articulating the business case for investing in wildfire prevention, management, and remediation.
  • Coordinate communications related to the community’s workplan and deliverables
  • Coordinate integration of the community within the 1t.org regional network
  • Coordinate the integration of relevant content into Forum events as appropriate

Preferred requirements and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in business, science, communications, media, economics, journalism, or other relevant fields.
  • 8+ years of professional experience working in international settings, ideally supporting community or stakeholder engagement for public impact goals.
  • Strong community management skills
  • A high degree of intellectual curiosity with the discipline and desire to also deliver short-term results and long-term change.
  • Ability to build trusted relationships with colleagues and external stakeholders alike.
  • A good understanding of Nature-based solutions for landscape resilience is a plus
  • Experience managing a multistakeholder forum is a plus
  • Must be fluent in written and spoken English, knowledge of other languages is a plus.

Salary

The annual salary range for this role is $120,000-$140,000 in New York.

Please Note: This role requires the ability to work on site 3 days per week per company policy.

This temporary position is a duration of 8 months, with possibility of extension.
