About Community Action Works

At Community Action Works, we believe that environmental threats are big, but the power of well-organized community groups is bigger.

Community Action Works (formerly known as Toxics Action Center) empowers people and local organizations, offering training, organizing and other resources needed to stop and clean up pollution at the local level. Since 1987, our team has worked with groups in more than 1,000 communities and trained over 20,000 people across the Northeast to confront local environmental threats and the polluters behind them.

We don’t just believe in the power of well-organized community groups. We help groups prove their power and use it to make a positive difference in the lives of thousands of people, whether it means closing down a toxic incinerator in Massachusetts, cleaning up a leaking landfill in Maine, blocking a dangerous pipeline in New Hampshire, preventing pesticide contamination in Vermont, or shuttering dirty power plants in Connecticut.

Community Action Works is seeking a Deputy Director. This position requires exercising discretion and independent judgment in making decisions in matters of significance.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Help Community Action Works fulfill our core mission of providing a clearinghouse of training, strategic advice and other resources for people and groups in local communities working to solve pollution and other environmental threats, especially in the most impacted communities.
  • Help recruit and manage the Community Action Works staff, including a digital organizer and a field organizer.
  • Organize our annual conference and other training and fundraising events, including those marking our 35th anniversary.
  • Identify and cultivate our donors and funders through donor visits, grant-seeking, canvassing and other grassroots fundraising tactics.
  • Strategically employ the power of The Public Interest Network to connect local activists with the issue expertise they need to win and the advocacy campaigns they need to expand their impact.

Qualifications

Candidates should have 5 years of experience organizing and training community leaders, managing staff, fundraising and organizing large events. Candidates should also have passion and enthusiasm for working alongside community members to train them to be leaders and take on environmental threats.

Compensation and Benefits
The starting compensation range for this position is $40,000-$75,000 and depends on relevant experience, education, and location. Candidates on the lower end of directly relevant experience should expect to be on the lower end of this range; candidates on the higher end of relevant experience are likely to be on the higher end of this range. Community Action Works offers an excellent benefits package. Our benefits package includes medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and dependents, paid time off, our commuter benefit program, a 401(k) plan with employer match, parental leave, long term disability insurance, and may include needs-based student loan assistance. We also offer an excellent training program and opportunities for advancement.

Location
