General Description

This role will require an experienced and visionary social impact professional to assist the Chief Impact Officer in the creation and implementation of social impact strategies that leverage BSF's research, programs, chapters, digital innovation strategies, and advocacy efforts. This role will play a pivotal role in influencing our theory of change to listen, share, partner, and act.

The Director, Social Impact will represent BSF internally and externally and will drive awareness and engagement through partnerships in the non-profit, philanthropic, corporate, Military and Veteran Service Organization (MSO/VSO) and government space.  

The Director, Social Impact role collaborates closely with and supports Social Impact leadership leads on the development and implementation of national level program design and delivery, research and evaluation, military spouse employment initiatives, Chapters and Outposts, and more. This position supports a highly influential cross-sector collaborative of nonprofits, government partners, and corporate and philanthropic leaders.

Key Job Functions

  • Oversee the daily functions of key partnerships and programs that elevate BSF’s work on the civilian-military divide. Coordinate regular communications and tracking of activities, and work closely with BSF’s Development, Finance and Operations teams on the implementation and progress of programs.
  • Support Social Impact leads on the development and implementation  social impact programming and progress within project management and CRM software (Salesforce Non-Profit and HIVE)
  • Aid Social Impact outreach and relationship building efforts with Military and Veteran Service Organization (MSO/VSOs) partners, academic institutions and other organizations that are aligned with BSF’s Social Impact Program’s goals
  • Support BSF's Social Impact department by refining its operations strategy to support the maintenance and expansion of BSF key initiatives, and work closely with BSF Operations, Finance and External Affairs leads on company-wide policies and practices.  
  • Track and communicate Social Impact activities to internal and external stakeholders, coordinate quarterly “All Hands” meetings for staff and support Social Impact program leads on their contributions to reports and presentations for external stakeholders.
  • Work closely with the Communications and Digital Innovation teams to raise awareness of Social Impact activities by amplifying BSF's narrative, mission and values.
  • Work closely with the Chief Executive Officer’s team to schedule meetings with external stakeholders and to share updates on Social Impact activities.
  • Grow Blue Star Families’ presence and brand awareness through new partnership programs, BSF Outposts, and through democracy-centered partnerships that  are working to bridge the civilian-military divide
  • Represent and speak on behalf of BSF to external stakeholders, present BSF programs to key community influencers, and organization stakeholders.
  • Engage with Blue Star Families advisory committees to further the social impact mission
  • Aid Chief Impact Officer and VPs of Development in cross departmental collaboration to prepare funding proposals and secure philanthropic support
  • Perform other duties as assigned      

Required Experience, Skills, Background

  • Bachelor's Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, Public or Business Administration, Public Policy, or related field
  • Seven or more years related experience required, senior management experience preferred
  • Extensive experience in partnership building and Social Impact management
  • Demonstrated administrative, strategic, and leadership skills, including the ability to develop and implement action plans
  • Ability to operate in a fast-moving, fluid environment  
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with internal and external partners
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace and Salesforce NPC, and the ability to learn quickly
  • Occasional out of town, overnight travel may be required
  • May occasionally be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays as necessary to carry out key job functions

Desired Experience, Skills & Background

  • Graduate degree in a social or humanistic science
  • Understanding of the non-profit sector
  • Familiarity with the military lifestyle; knowledge of Military and Veteran Service Organizations (MSO/VSO) operating in the space  
  • Understanding of applied, mixed-methods, social science research
