Context

The Center for Green Market Activation™ (GMA) is a US-based, globally-focused nonprofit that was launched in Spring of 2024. Through innovative book-and-claim systems, new and creative procurement approaches, and demand aggregating buyers’ alliances, GMA catalyzes and scales the uptake of low- and zero-carbon goods and services in the hardest-to-abate sectors. GMA’s organizational design combines shared expertise and infrastructure with sector-specific programs. By consolidating a range of value chain mitigation initiatives under a single non-profit umbrella, we will help companies ramp up their Scope 3 mitigation quickly, starting in one sector and easily moving into another.

Key Responsibilities and Qualifications

This role will provide day-to-day support for at least 2 of our initiatives. Please see the Sustainable Aviation Buyers Alliance and the Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance for an idea of GMA-related programs. Other near-term programs or partnerships focus on heavy-duty trucking, concrete and cement, aluminum, steel and chemicals.

A key area of focus for this position will be vetting alternative fuel proposals received and supporting the procurement of alternative fuel certificates for aviation and maritime shipping customers (i.e. to cover scope 3 emissions). Vetting includes fuel sustainability and reviewing GHG lifecycle assessments, among many other elements. These are trail-blazing efforts requiring staff comfortable working in uncharted territory with highly technical, sensitive issues – advanced alternative fuels and their various attributes, novel legal contracts, complex pricing structures, etc.

Skills and Qualifications

Required:

• Strong commitment to and enthusiasm for addressing the climate crisis
• At least 2 years of work experience involving fuels, preferably alternative fuels (e.g. green hydrogen, green ammonia, or biofuels)
• Strong interest in becoming an expert in a wide variety of alternative fuels, including sustainability certification processes, and in GHG accounting and reporting for the transportation sector
• Strong written and oral communication skills
• Must love working in teams on collaborative projects as well as be a self-starter and able to complete tasks with little oversight

One or more of the following strongly preferred:

• Experience working with alternative fuels, ideally experience working with LCA for alternative fuels and evaluation of well-to-wake carbon intensities
• Strong understanding of the fundamentals of Life Cycle Assessment/Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), e.g. the setting of system boundaries, selecting baselines/counterfactuals, allocation practices
• General understanding of fuel pathways in the maritime and aviation sectors, e.g. feedstocks, conversion technologies
• Experience with international climate or energy policy, e.g. EU RED, CORSIA, FuelEU Maritime, etc.
• Experience working in or with maritime or aviation sectors, especially if related to climate change, energy or sustainability programs.
• Experience working with or in environmental markets or environmental attribute certificates, e.g. carbon offsets or renewable energy certificates (RECs)
• Experience supporting or managing corporate procurement processes, specifically requests for proposals (RFPs)

Preferred:

• Strong proficiency in excel-based modeling (other modeling experience very welcome)
• Proficiency in visual analytics platforms like Tableau
• Knowledge of the GHG Protocol and/or Science Based Targets Initiative, i.e. significant knowledge of GHG accounting, reporting and claiming, ideally:
• Experience developing corporate GHG inventories and reporting against climate targets and/or
• Experience with scope 3 emissions accounting, reporting or claiming as well as supplier engagement/procurement approaches to address corporate scope 3 emissions

Salary and Benefits

• Salary: $76,000 – $115,000 dependent on qualifications and geographical location
• Eligibility for 15%+ year-end bonus

Work/Life Balance

GMA takes work/life balance very seriously. Outside of stakeholder meetings, we will be as flexible as possible on work hours to meet your particular home life needs. Staff will be expected to work an average of 8 hours/day.
