Are you passionate about creating a more welcoming world for people seeking refuge? Are you driven to elevate the voices of displaced people and partner with them in crafting high-impact advocacy strategies? Refugees International is seeking a dynamic and experienced individual to serve as our Senior Director of Advocacy Strategy. This critical leadership role will develop and drive comprehensive advocacy strategies to advance Refugees International’s policy priorities and impact. You will report to the Vice President of Strategic Outreach and be an essential part of Refugees International’s collaborative Strategic Outreach team in close partnership with refugee leaders and Refugees International’s program team of advocates.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and oversee the implementation of advocacy strategies and provide strategic guidance and direction to Refugees International leadership and staff across portfolios.
  • Drive organizational advocacy priorities and outreach strategies based on external policy landscape and opportunities for action.
  • Maintain an in-depth understanding of the policy and political space around our issues with key audiences including in the U.S. Congress, the White House, the State Department, USAID, United Nations, other relevant agencies, and multilateral institutions; and work with Refugees International’s staff to craft advocacy strategies.  
  • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with critical government officials, policymakers, and other advocacy targets.
  • Deepen partnerships with refugees, displaced people, and partner organizations in the advocacy field.
  • Prepare background and briefing materials for Refugees International leadership and staff on the landscape of policy and political developments related to forced displacement and provide coaching for Refugees International subject matter experts on advocacy opportunities and strategies.
  • Draft materials for internal or external publication that contribute to advancing Refugees International’s advocacy goals and priorities.  
  • Represent Refugees International in internal and external, private and public meetings, briefings, and critical partner coalition engagements and partnerships.

Ideal Qualifications and Skills

  • At least 10 to 15 years of experience in advocacy, government relations, public policy, or campaigns, with a focus on humanitarian and forced displacement issues.
  • Demonstrated expertise developing and implementing advocacy strategies, including policy analysis, stakeholder mapping and engagement, and coalition building.
  • Strong understanding of the U.S. policy landscape, international humanitarian law, human rights principles, and refugee protection frameworks.
  • Proven track record of successfully engaging with policymakers and diverse stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Innovative and strategic thinker with the ability to problem-solve and adapt.
  • Strong commitment to Refugees International’s mission and values of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
  • Appetite to work in a highly collaborative environment.

This position is based out of Refugees International’s office in Washington DC. We have a flexible, hybrid work environment, with an expectation of 2-3 days in the office per week.

Compensation

$115,000 to $140,000 depending on background and experience.
