Can You Make a Difference as a Freelancer?

Ah, the gig economy. If you scroll social media for too long, you’ll find an influencer telling you how you can work from anywhere, set your own hours, and still make bank.

It almost sounds too good to be true, but is it?

For those of us who want to make the world a better place in the social impact industry, another question comes up: can you actually make a difference as a freelancer?

The short answer is yes. Socially conscious businesses and non-profits hire contract workers all the time, especially in today’s remote work climate. It won’t take long to scroll a few job boards and find contract roles that contribute to causes you really believe in.

Another perk of freelancing is that you don’t have to stick to only one cause. You can take on several clients with different missions and contribute your skills to each one. If you like variety, freelancing could be a great option for you.

However, there are some harsh realities to the freelance lifestyle that the influencers aren’t telling you about, so allow us to burst your bubble.

As a freelancer, work stability isn’t promised. You gotta get out there and find your own work, and your workload can fluctuate from one month to the next. You also miss out on a lot of perks and benefits that conventional jobs offer and it can be hard to set work-life boundaries.

Like all jobs, freelancing comes with its pros and cons. The good news is that you can totally make a difference as a gig worker.
