Cornell Researchers Create New Recyclable Plastic
Move over, polypropylene, HDPE, polystyrene, PVC, and however many other types of plastics already exist…there’s a new plastic in town.
And this one maybe hopefully won’t pollute the planet. Ya see, in the beginning, plastics were made to last forever. Only recently did we realize this is not such a good thing since the stuff never degrades.
Some smartypants chemists at Cornell are trying to change that.
They’re specifically working on a new version of the plastic that’s used in bowling balls, replacement hip joints, and car tires. You know, the stuff that’s super durable and can’t be recycled, so it ends up incinerated or tossed in a landfill.
The chemists have a new version of the same plastic, but this time it can actually degrade and be recycled. If you want the super science-y explanation, just go read this article cause we’re here for the cliff notes.
According to the pros, this new plastic will still degrade very slowly, but it will eventually break down.
We think this is cool for a few reasons. First, as much as we want to be plastic-free, zero-waste warriors, plastic is everywhere and impossible to completely avoid. Sometimes the best option is to use it as long as possible and then dispose of it responsibly.
It’s also cool that the researchers are targeting the type of plastic we can’t live without, like the stuff used in tires and hip replacements (if someone wants to argue that we can’t live without bowling balls, be our guest.) This type of plastic has never been recyclable, and we hope this new version makes a real difference.
You don’t have to be a Cornell know-it-all to make a big difference too. Scroll down to start applying for jobs that do good in the world.
