This Clean-Up Competition Removed Seven Tonnes of Plastic From a Hungarian Lake
Look, we know the world has been …*checks notes*… a lot lately. We aren’t here to bum you out with more bleak and downright unbelievable headlines, which is why we’re delivering some good news to your inbox today.
Come with us to Hungary, where just a few weeks ago, over 300 people gathered at Lake Tisza for a plastic pick-up competition.
In just a few hours, participants collected over seven tonnes of plastic waste from the lake. And the grand prize for the team who gathered the most? A giant plastic cup.
That’s right. People spent their precious free time lugging trash out of a lake all for a measly cup. And we think it’s amazing.
The annual competition started in 2013 and is sponsored by local businesses and institutions. Participants are referred to as “PET Pirates,” and they sail around the lake on makeshift barges. Check out the photos from this year’s event here.
We’re honestly obsessed and want to become PET Pirates now. This event is badass because it brings the community together, inspires people to take ownership and pride in where they live, and benefits planet earth.
Stick with us while we get corny as hell for a sec, but events like this remind us of the good of humanity. When headlines are bleak and the world’s problems seem overwhelming and unsolvable, it’s nice to remember that a group of people can come together and make a positive difference in the world.
We challenge you to find a local clean-up to participate in, or heck, organize your own! See ya next week, Impact Jobbers.

Bummer of the Week:
Amazon Prime Day came and went this week, and a new review has found that the mega shopping day is a major cause of injuries for warehouse workers. Senator Bernie Sanders released the report after conducting a year-long Senate committee investigation into Amazon’s safety practices.
