How Does Job Hunting Impact Your Mental Health?

Heyo, Impact Jobbers. Today we’re gonna talk about something a lil bit serious, so buckle up. We need to discuss the impact of job hunting on the ole mental health.

According to a recent survey, over 70% of applicants reported that job searching has negatively impact their mental wellbeing. There’s tons of reasons for this, but to name a few:

Finding the right jobs to apply for is stressful, getting ghosted by employers is disheartening and frustrating, interviews are anxiety-inducing…need we go on? The process of constantly putting yourself out there is a rollercoaster of emotions, not to mention the added financial stress if you’re unemployed.

Here’s our tips for safeguarding your mental health during your job search:

  1. Slow your roll. If you set a lofty goal of applying to X amount of jobs per day, you’re gonna burn out real fast. Set a smaller, more realistic goal, and prioritize jobs that feel like a good fit instead of applying for anything and everything. Slow and steady wins the race!
  2. Take breaks. Give yourself at least one day off from the job search per week. Touch grass, bro.
  3. Talk to someone. Whether it’s a friend who’s been there, your mom, or a therapist, you need to air out your feelings and frustrations.
  4. Relieve stress. Punch a bag, take a yoga class, or run around the block if you need to. Do whatever you gotta do to move stress out of your body so that you can resume your search cool, calm, and collected.
  5. Maintain a routine. This is good for everyone, but especially for anyone currently unemployed. Maintaining a regular schedule will prevent the job search from taking over your life. Set a time to “clock out” of your search every day so that you can enjoy other aspects of your life.

Lastly, remember that you are more than your job, and that one day the grueling search WILL end.

In the meantime, we’re here to make it easier on ya. Each week we serve up the best social impact jobs on the web. Scroll down to start applying today, and let us know how else we can support you. Happy job hunting!
