How to Transition to a Career in Sustainability

So you want to become an advocate for the planet? Well, you’ve got our full support, fist bumps, rounds of applause, snaps, and whatever else we can do to show that we think this idea is better and more helpful than billionaires in space.

The good news is that job options in ESG/CSR are rapidly expanding. But if you’re looking for a cookie-cutter way to transition into the field, we can’t give you that.

Much like the solutions to climate change, there is no one way into a sustainability career. Choosing the right path for you is like trying to choose a meal off the Olive Garden menu.

But here’s what we can tell you:

  1. It’s helpful if you know a little bit about everything. If you work for a company that only has one sustainability expert, and that person is you, they’ll expect you to know about climate science, biodiversity, renewable energy, and several other topics that fall under the sustainability umbrella.
  2. Universities and professional institutes often offer courses that can help you develop skills, learn the terminology, and become a competitive candidate for a sustainability job.
  3. We recommend exploring what aspect of sustainability speaks to you. Research in-demand jobs, which range from recycling plant operatives to environmental lawyers, and see where your passions and skills line up with the market.

To get an idea of what jobs are available, scroll through our job board! The options are endless! But please act soon before sh*t really hits the fan! We’re covering our fear with optimism and exclamation marks! We believe in you!
