Impact Jobs That Are NOT Desk Jobs

Remember when you were a little kid and someone asked you what you wanted to be when you grew up, and you answered that you would love to sit at a desk and stare at a screen under fluorescent lights all day?

Yeah, we don’t remember that either.

The good news is that you don’t HAVE to have a desk job to work in the social impact industry. There are tons of options that will have you on your feet. Let’s check ‘em out.

1. Community Organizer: most nonprofits need a community organizer, which is someone who meets with community members, attends events, and mobilizes volunteers around the cause. If you want a public-facing job, this is a great option.
2. Field Officer: this role is less front-facing and more travel and research-based. Field officers are needed to implement and monitor projects in a variety of areas, such as educational programs, disaster relief, and health interventions.
3. Social Worker: home visits, community outreach, and crisis intervention will keep you out of the office and providing direct aid to people in need.
4. Conservation Work: get your hands dirty with habitat rehabilitation, sustainable agriculture, or wildlife monitoring. If you care about the planet and want to become one with nature, this work is for you.
5. Youth Outreach: if you want to stay active, work with kids. In this type of role, you would coordinate youth programs, mentorships, camps, and other activities that will help the next generation thrive.
