Ten years ago, the La Joyita prison in Panama was known for its filthy living conditions. Inmates had to wear bath towels over their heads and keep their plates covered to keep swarming flies away.
Today, circumstances look completely different thanks to a recycling and plant nursery program called EcoSólidos, which is supported by the Red Cross. In the program, prisoners sort through recyclable materials to earn reduced sentences.
The program has resulted in reduced prison fighting and a 20% drop in the recidivism rate of released inmates. Living conditions have also greatly improved, and 80% of all waste at La Joyita is recycled.
La Joyita inmates also turned an abandoned area of the prison into a garden, the Sembrando Paz vivarium, that uses composted material from the recycling program to grow native trees and other plants.
The vivarium contributes 1,500 tree seedlings per year to the Million Hectares Alliance, a program that aims to replant one million hectares in Panama over the next 20 years.
