Transitioning Into the Social Impact Industry? Follow THIS Advice
Whattup, job seekers, and happy almost weekend to you! Before you’re mentally sipping on bottomless mimosas at brunch with your BFFs, allow us to offer you some friendly career advice. If you’re trying to transition into the social impact industry after already having a career in a different industry, this one’s for you.
We know it ain’t easy to pick up and change careers, but we applaud your gusto. Plus, the world is gonna be a better place for the bada$$ work you’re about to do at your next job.
But how do you actually land that job if you don’t have experience in this industry? Don’t worry darling, just follow our advice below.
First things first, you need to focus on your transferable skills and leverage the h*ck out of them. What skills have you developed in your previous role/industry that you can use in your next one? It can be stuff like:
You can highlight your transferable skills in two places on your resume: under the job description of your previous work experience and in the skills section. You can also mention them in every applicant’s favorite thing: your cover letter.
We recommend tailoring your resume and cover letter for each job application so that you can match your skills to role and give the hiring manager every reason to believe that you’re the right fit.
If there are gaps between your skills and what your dream career requires, take the time to learn the skills to make yourself more competitive. Courses, volunteer work, and freelance jobs can help you gain the experience you need.
Transitioning to a new industry is a big undertaking, but you got this. If Pam Beasley can go from receptionist to salesperson to office administrator, you can h*ckin do anything.
